Romford District Scouts

The 24th World Scout Jamboree - North America 2019 is over and here we take a look at what three of our adults have been doing. Andy, Jim and Lucy were all IST (International Service Team) members and had various roles between them.

District Commissioner Andy Mann was a Sub Camp Commissioner on Alpha 1 - Acropolis sub camp. His duties involved looking after the 28 Units from 19 different nations on the sub camp leading the duty officers. The first 4 days involved 16 hour days setting up the site and making sure everyone had what they needed. Scouts came from the USA, Uk, Taiwan, Japan, Norway, Ireland to name but a few.

James Bennett - SL at 19th Romford was working on the Site Security/ Stewarding team. Keeping the 45,000 scouts safe on a site the size of Romford was a huge task and Jim worked within a team made up from countries all around the world including some serving New York Police Officers. Jim also escorted Chief Scout Bear Grylls around the site as he made a visit before the official opening.

Network Member Lucy Mann was part of the Canopy Tours team. Lucy was a tour guide on the tree top zip lines and spent her days 50 foot up a tree zipping along the course when needed. To carry out this role, Lucy had to spend four days training and then take a final assessment with the American climbing team examiners, which she passed ๐Ÿ˜€

All three leaders made a huge difference to the 45,000 Scouts from the 150 Countries that attended the #scoutjamboree. Andy, Jim and Lucy also received the IST Service Award - well done to all three of them as only 1/3 of IST were able to revive this award.

The three leaders have now left the Summit Bechtel Reserve and the WSJ and have headed to Washington with 700 other UK IST member for two days before taking optional post event tours of Mexico (Andy & Lucy) and Jim heads to New York. They spent last night racing around DC on Uber Scooters before koining the whole UK Contingent at a Baseball Game.

Come back soon to see what the 10 Romford Scouts and one Romford Leader have been up to at the jamboree and their own trip to Washington.

10 Explorer Scouts & 4 Leaders are almost one week in to a trip of a life time 24th World Scout Jamboree - North America 2019. Since arriving via a brief visit to New York, the Explorers have been busy finding their way around the truly massive site. To put into context the site is bigger than Romford and take on average an hour to walk from their sub camp to an activity. The Summit Bechtel Reserve has become home to 55,000 Scouts and leaders for 2 weeks and become a mini town in its own right.

They have been busy walking up Mount Jack at 2800 feet to take part in Highland games, visited cultural awareness events, shooting, fishing and some have become experts in trading and taking selfies. And of course attended the opening ceremony (where over 50,000 devices connected to the WiFi) to see the flags of over 140 nations parade onto the stage and ended with an amazing drone light show.

The four leaders have been busy in their roles also, as a unit leader to the Greater London North East Scouts Unit, a Sub Camp Commissioner on Alpha 1, securing the safety of the site and running canopy tours in the zip wires.

Come back in a few days time for a further update (if we can get some photos from the kids that is ๐Ÿ˜ฌ) on what has been going on in West Virginia so far.

Over the last few days 3 Romford leaders have departed for America and yesterday 10 young people along with another leader departed the UK as part of the Greater London North East Scouts Contingent. All are heading to the 24th World Scout Jamboree - North America 2019. A trip of a life time is an understatement.

We have our DC Andy Mann and 19th Romford Leaders James Bennet and Lucy Mann working as IST on the site supporting 45,000 participants and Liana Rees as part of the GLNE County unit.

The unit arrived in New York last night via a transfer from Toronto. Follow us during the week with some updates on all of our 14 leaders and Explorers and what they have been up to...

A brilliant time was had by our District Explorer Scouts taking part in Gilwell 24 this weekend. The event started officially at 09.00am yesterday and ran for 24 hours. A total of 5,000 Scouts from around the UK took part.

The Scouts were on fairground rides, climbing, cooking, bouncy castles, 4 x4โ€™s and meeting the Army & Police. They were at the silent disco at gone midnight, scuba diving at 05.00 and still going strong as the event ended at 09.00 today.

This Fatherโ€™s Day, the Scouts reveal new findings on what parents and children really want from each other and how Scouts offers a perfect platform to nurture these relationships.

It may come as a surprise to hear that buying your teenager the latest gadget and plying them with pocket money is probably not the way to their heart. Research carried out by YouGov and Scouts has revealed invaluable insights into what children are really looking for from their parents, and vice-versa.

Take a few minutes to watch the video below and see if it resonates with you if you are already a parent.

Come back later this week to hear about the outcome of the YouGov poll and how Scouting can help you and your child / grandchild gain skills for life....

One Romford Scout leader wonโ€™t be on parade this Sunday, as Tom Fisher from 19th Romford is running the London Marathon, below is his story.

If you want to sponsor Tom, the link is at the bottom of the page.

๐Ÿ˜€โšœ๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿฅ‡ #skillsforlife. #iscout

As most of you are aware, later this month I'll be running 26.2 miles in the London marathon. I'll be going through the pain to raise money for two Alzheimer's charities.

Alzheimer's is a disease close to my heart after my grandma was diagnosed a few years ago now. Throughout the years it's been difficult to see the affect it's had on both my family who do all they can to ensure she still lives the same life and the affect it's had on her.

If you want to donate, it'll be so appreciative, and hopefully it will be just a small gesture that can go along way to eventually get rid of Alzheimer's altogether. However, what would mean the world to me would be seeing everyone I know on the day, I can't even begin to imagine how much your support would mean not only to me but all of the other runners on the day. Anyhow, below is the link to my donation page which explains a little more why I decided to sign up for the marathon.

Thanks for your support, love you all!

St Georgeโ€™s Day - 23rd April.

Baden-Powell referred to the Knights of the Round Table in the Arthurian Legend, and to St George who was their Patron Saint.

He then went on: 'He is also the Patron Saint of Scouts everywhere. Therefore all Scouts should know his story. St George was typical of what a Scout should be.

'When he was faced by a difficulty or danger, however great it appeared, even in the shape of a dragon - he did not avoid it or fear it but went at it with all the power he could... That is exactly the way a Scout should face a difficulty or danger no matter how great or how terrifying it may appear. They should go at it boldly and confidently, using every power that they can to try and overcome it, and the probability is that they will succeed.

'St George's Day is April 23, and on that day, Scouts remind themselves of their Promise and Scout Law. Not that a Scout should ever forget either. However, on St George's Day, we make a special point of thinking about them.'

We hope to see as many of our 1,000 children and 400 adults at parade this Sunday (the 28th April). If you wish to watch us as we parade along Clockhouse Lane and Collier Row Road, the parade marches of at 2.30pm. Please feel feee to line the route, wave a flag and take photos...

We start the year with some changes to the District Team.

I am pleased to announce that Lee Clarke โ€“ the County Commissioner has agreed to my appointment of Tony Peters as a Deputy District Commissioner (subject to the County AAC approval). Tony will now join Steve Wiltshire in helping me manage the District. In simple terms, the roles will be split as follows.

Tony Peters โ€“ Deputy DC for 6 to 14: Tony will line manage and support the ADC Beavers, Cubs & Scouts and help me support the 16 Group Scout Leaders and oversee the Groups.

Steve Wiltshire โ€“ Deputy DC for 14 to 25: Steve will line manage, Explorers, Young Leaders, Network and the DofE scheme. As many will know the largest Explorer and DofE provision in GLNE.

Following Tony changing roles, I am pleased to announce that Maria Green will change roles to become ADC Cubs. With those changes in place, I have asked Cheryl Clark to take on the role of ADC Beavers and I am pleased that she has accepted the challenge. Cheryl has already been supporting Maria in Beavers for some time and I am sure she will settle in just fine.

I am also pleased to announce that we intend to launch a Network section in Romford. This section is aimed at supporting our 18 to 25 year olds with a means of meeting and scouting together and promoting adventurous training opportunities as well as looking at options for International trips, Scouts of the World Award and Explorer Belts, as well as the Queen Scout Award and DofE Gold Award. To that end, I have asked Adam Vale to take on the role of District Scout Network Commissioner. Adam has been an Explorer Scout leader for a number of years and will be known to almost all of our 70 plus people in the District aged 18 to 25.

Mick Clark will continue as ADC Scouts in a section that has seen increases of young people over the last four years and in particular more of them turning 14 and feeding into Explorers. Which leads me to Dick Catchpole who will also continue in his role as the District Explorer Scout Commissioner (DESC). As you will know, as a District we feel the Explorer section is vital for our survival as a District and to produce tomorrows leaders. We have a huge success rate of getting our 18 year olds into adult leader roles and we need to do even more to support this section.

2019 is set to be an exciting year, with lots going on for our 1000 plus young people... #skillsforlife #iscout

Explorer Scouts from two of our units spent the night with 5 leaders from Sri Lanka this week. The leaders were in the UK for a few weeks and after a chance meeting with our District Commissioner last weekend he invited them to join the Explorers (or โ€œSenior Scoutsโ€ as they would be know in Sri Lanka) for a night to see what we do in the UK. They joined in with some team games and ended with a camp fire where both Nationalities leant some new camp fire songs.

Well done to Unit A & X Explorer Scouts Nathan Rayment-Davis and Max Burke who took part in the London to Brighton bike ride today.

They rode the 54 miles in aid of the British Heart Foundation. Max was born with a rare heart condition and had life saving surgery as a baby and wanted to give something back. Nathanโ€™s Nan has also recently undergone heart surgery and like Max, felt it would not be possible without extra funding

They were joined by Maxโ€™s dad Chris who is also a Romford Scout Leader. Well done to all three of them.

If you would like to donate towards the course and help the boys reach their targets follow the link below and sponsor them if you can, thanks.

Today 6 Scouts and two leaders from 19th Romford were in London, celebrating the Queenโ€™s official birthday watching the Trooping The Colour Parade, with over 1000 guards, horses and 400 band members. It was great to be able to see so many members of the Royal Family up close from the Youth Enclosure.

Here are some pictures from the day, the Scouts had some good views and walked down The Mall to Buckingham Palace to see the Fly Past as well...
