Romford District Explorer Scouts are pleased to announce their 2020 International Expedition to Croatia (with a day trip to Italy) in August 2020. We aim to be taking 60 Explorer Scouts and up to 8/10 Leaders as part of our contingent.

We will depart the UK on Thursday 13th August (Hopefully with Easyjet via Southend airport) and fly to Pula in North Croatia. We will then depart Croatia a week later and return via the same airport on Thursday 20th August 2020.

You will take part in an action packed week of activities, visits and experience new challenges. We will also travel by high speed ferry to Venice, Italy for the day, visiting the famous St Mark’s Square, maybe taking in a Gondola ride and visiting some of the sites in this historic City and of course the famous Italian Ice Cream parlours whilst exploring the canals, the main way of travel in the city that is below sea level and slowly sinking !

We will be staying at Pula Youth Hostel, in the beautiful Valasaline Bay located on the Adriatic Sea (with its own Beach) and just 10 minutes outside the Historic Pula Town Centre. We will be based in 3 x 24 bed pavilions and a main building for eating and meeting. Rooms will be for 6 Scouts. The stay is fully catered, which will allow us more time to take part in activities as all of our cooking will be done for us.

Although the programme is far from complete, our proposed activities include. Sea Kayaking (a full day out around the coast, with stops en route for swimming and snorkelling), Stand Up Paddle Boarding (possibly at night with LED lit boards), a boat trip to the reef to go Snorkelling, Postjna Caves and hiking in the Verudela Peninsular. We also plan to visit the world renowned Marine Biology School based just outside Pula. The main theme of this week will be water, and why not with some of the best coast line in the World.

Pula itself is a 3000 year old City, built in the 1st Century and is home to the famous Roman Amphitheatre. The city owes much to the Romans and is full of ruins and now very much is old meets new, with shops and ice cream parlours as well as old cobbled streets located on the Sea, so the cooling breezes help keep the 30 degree plus August temperatures down just a little.

The cost of the trip will be £850 per person. A £100 deposit is required when you apply, the balance will be paid by monthly (Standing order) payments of £50 starting in May 2019 and ending in July 2020.

What next: If you would like to take part in the Croatia Expedition complete the online application form below and send your £100 deposit to the address listed or pay by direct bank transfer. This trip is only open to Explorer Scouts under the age of 18 at the time of the return date of the trip.

We will be holding a parent / participant briefing on Tuesday 5th March at 7.30pm (at a venue to be announced) with our travel partner – Venture Abroad – to highlight some of the programme, outline more on the trip and to answer any specific questions you may have.

The closing date for the Expedition is Sunday 10th March. We need to keep to a strict time line as we need to fill all of our spaces to obtain the best price for the trip and to secure our flights the day they become available from the airline. If you have any specific questions then please e-mail us at and we will do our best to answer anything before the meeting and or closing date.
